👑 Lead - The King in York

👑 "He's got cancer, I've got cancer - he gets it." King Charles visits York Hospital - King Charles, 77, made a surprise visit to York Hospital yesterday (Tuesday 26 May) to tour the newly redeveloped Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Cancer Centre - a £2.4 million facility due to officially open in July that will support thousands of people living with cancer across Yorkshire. The moment that dominated the coverage: Charles met Lou Rhodes, 49, from Hopgrove, York — a woman with stage 4 secondary breast cancer who was deeply involved in the design and development of the centre as a patient representative. She told the King that her father had died from cancer in 2024. He responded: "It's everywhere," then added: "It's so important to be able to talk."

Charles shared a rare hug and kiss on each cheek with Lou — described as an unusually warm physical gesture for the monarch. He also visited the centre's purpose-built garden, planting a Macmillan rose with Colm Gough (Macmillan personalised cancer care lead). He greeted cancer nurse specialists and Macmillan health professionals who explained how the redevelopment would support patients in the region. Charles has been patron of Macmillan Cancer Support since 1997. His own cancer treatment is continuing but was reduced in December 2025. Earlier the same day, the King visited the Animal and Plant Health Agency's York Biotech Campus at Sand Hutton (6 miles east of York) - a project aimed at protecting red squirrels in North Yorkshire. He was praised for his "innate understanding that we need to be in harmony with nature."The Independent | YorkMix | York Press
