🍜 Walmgate Restaurant Wins Five Stars in Hygiene Turnaround Good news from Walmgate. Noodle Lane — the popular Chinese restaurant that received a damaging one-star food hygiene rating following an inspection in January — has now been re-inspected and awarded five stars, the highest possible rating. The restaurant had been found to have issues with food safety management records following the initial visit. Clearly the team has acted quickly: the re-inspection delivers a full vindication and should reassure the loyal customers who have continued to back the restaurant through a difficult few weeks. ⚖️ Litter Crisis Heads to Court as York Council's Complaints System Falters A local councillor has announced plans to seek a Litter Abatement Order against City of York Council, citing persistent failure to keep public spaces clean — particularly along the A1237 northern bypass and the A64 southern bypass. Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, individuals can escalate litter complaints to a Magistrates' Court if the responsible authority fails to act. The move follows widespread frustration from residents who say they have submitted complaints online only to wait months beyond the council's promised ten-day response time. In most cases, the mere threat of a court order is enough to prompt a cleanup — but this councillor appears determined to follow through. (Source: York News Focus)

🏃♀️ York Named Safest City in England for Women Runners York has topped a Ronhill study ranking 16 English cities by how safe they are for women exercising outdoors. The city scored 28.56 on the Outdoor Exercise Safety Index — the highest of any city — recording the lowest rate of violent incidents in the country at just 25 per 1,000 residents. Some 71.4% of women in York participate in outdoor activities, reflecting not just safety but confidence. Outside London, Brighton and Oxford follow York in the rankings. The research comes amid a national conversation about safety for women in public spaces, and sits alongside York's inclusion in the new Violence Against Women and Girls strategy as a model for what safer cities can look like. 🏥 No Meningitis Cases in York — But Public Health Lead Urges Vigilance York's public health director Peter Roderick has confirmed there have been no cases of meningococcal disease recorded locally, as the peak of the Kent outbreak is now thought to have passed. As of Monday, 29 confirmed and suspected cases linked to the MenB strain had been recorded around the University of Kent — two people have died. Roderick is urging York residents to know the symptoms (sudden high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, a rash that does not fade under glass) and to get vaccinated — particularly those of student age. He is also urging families to ensure their MMR vaccines are up to date following a rise in measles cases locally. Monkbar Pharmacy in York received just four doses of the MenB vaccine, all of which have already been allocated. (Source: Gazette & Herald)

⚽ Minstermen Stunned 3–1 at Gateshead A bad night in the north-east. York City were beaten 3–1 by relegation-threatened Gateshead last night in a result that will jolt the title race. The Heed went ahead on 41 minutes when Brad Nicholson's long throw found Keaton Ward to slot home at the back post. Ash Boatswain doubled the lead on 65 minutes from Josh Anifowose's low pass, and Louis Storey headed in a third on 85 minutes from Ward's free-kick. Ollie Pearce pulled one back for York deep into added time, but it was nothing more than a consolation. The three points lifted Gateshead out of the relegation zone — adding injury to insult for the travelling Minstermen. York remain second in the National League but the gap to leaders Rochdale will have grown. (Source: The National League)
