Good morning, York. The resident doctor strike is underway from 7am today until Monday 13 April. If you have a hospital appointment, attend unless you've been contacted to cancel, and use NHS 111 online as a first port of call for non-emergencies. Meanwhile, a night of Bank Holiday drama at the LNER Stadium has York City sitting two points clear at the top of the National League. Let's get into it.

💡
🌤️ WEATHER: Storm Dave is a distant memory. According to the Met Office, today brings 18°C and blue skies over York, rising to a very warm 21°C on Wednesday - well above the April average. Enjoy it while it lasts: temperatures drop sharply back to 13°C on Thursday with rain returning, before settling around 12°C for the weekend. One note of caution for hay fever sufferers - a very high pollen warning is in place as warm, dry air follows the storm. Windows closed, antihistamines at the ready.

🔪 Man Sentenced for Stabbing American Tourist in Random York Attack - Matthew McPherson, 25, of Sawyers Walk, Dunnington, is before York Crown Court today for sentencing following last week's finding-of-fact hearing in which a jury concluded he stabbed American tourist Larry Welshans in an apparently random, unprovoked attack. Welshans, a man in his 70s, stepped outside the Moxy Hotel on Black Horse Lane, Peasholme Green at around 5am on 9 October 2025 for a cigarette while his wife prepared to leave for London. McPherson crept up behind him and stabbed him with a kitchen knife, with DNA from the blade matching the victim's blood - and a second knife was also found on McPherson at arrest. Welshans survived, was treated at Leeds General Infirmary, and gave evidence by video link from the United States. McPherson was not tried in the conventional sense: the "finding of fact" hearing determines whether he carried out the acts alleged, given his stated mental health disabilities. YorkMix

💰 North Yorkshire Police Recover More Than £3 Million for Fraud Victims - North Yorkshire Police has revealed that over £3 million has been returned to fraud victims across the region - driven largely by the work of Financial Abuse Safeguarding Officer Rachel Graham in the force's economic crime unit. Since April 2025 alone, her work has seen more than £2.1 million recovered, including over £250,000 prevented from reaching criminals in the first place. PCSO Nathan Stuart stressed that fraud does not only affect older people: "A badly timed email when you are up to your eyeballs in stress, a momentary lapse in your thought patterns can result in a loss of information and/or money." Anyone who has been a victim can report online via the North Yorkshire Police website or by calling 101. York Press

🎤 York MP: Kanye West "Should Not Be Allowed to Come to Our Country" - York Central MP Rachael Maskell has called for Kanye West to be denied entry to the UK, after the rapper was announced as the headline act for all three nights of Wireless Festival in London's Finsbury Park in July. Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Maskell said: "We cannot allow these performers to have a platform" - citing West's antisemitic remarks, his recording of a song titled Heil Hitler and his promotion of swastika merchandise in recent years. She called on the Home Secretary to refuse West a visa should one be applied for. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described West's booking as "deeply concerning" and said antisemitism "in any form is abhorrent." Sponsors Pepsi, Diageo and Rockstar Energy have all since withdrawn from the festival. Tottenham Hotspur also reportedly rejected a request for West to perform at their stadium because of the club's historical connection to London's Jewish community. BBC News UK | RTE

🌊 Coastguard Warning After People Nearly Cut Off by Tide at Robin Hood's Bay - Whitby Coastguard has issued an urgent safety reminder after visitors were almost cut off by the tide at Robin Hood's Bay on Easter Sunday. The coastguard was alerted in time and the situation resolved without anyone needing rescue - but officers used the incident to stress a crucial message: if you are worried about someone's safety on the coast, call 999 and ask for the coastguard immediately. Do not post on social media first. "Time matters," the coastguard said. "Waiting, watching, or posting online can delay the help that may be needed." They added that people "can and do get cut off quicker than expected" and that situations can become life-threatening within seconds. Worth remembering for any York residents planning coastal day trips over the school holidays. YorkMix
