Yorkshire Marathon road closures this weekend, 2,000 missing £100 payments, tarmac complaints + Love Island star in York tonight
🌥️ Good morning York. A cloudy start today, around 8C outside right now, with some brighter spells breaking through later and temperatures reaching 14C, according to the Met Office. Here’s Thursday’s York Brief.
🚧 Major road closures are coming to York this weekend as over 10,000 runners take on the Yorkshire Marathon on Sunday. Parking restrictions begin at 4pm on Saturday, October 18 and run until 6pm Sunday. University Road closes from 10am Saturday. City center streets including Parliament Street, Coney Street, Blake Street, Deangate, Goodramgate and Monkgate will be affected from 8am Sunday. 💰 More than 2,000 eligible York residents have still not claimed their one-off £100 Household Support Fund payment this winter, despite being contacted directly by the council. The funding is available to help with everyday bills and unexpected costs. - City of York Council press release.
“I’d urge anyone who has received a letter inviting them to get their share of the Household Support Fund to make sure they claim it before the closing date on 23 November”.
🏗️ York’s streets deserve better, says letter writer who criticised tarmac patch repairs in King’s Square. “There are patches of tarmac all across our city centre and it makes you wonder why our footpaths cannot be repaired with matching quality materials. York is a magnificent city and deserves better than this cheap and inappropriate treatment,” the letter published yesterday stated. 🎉 Love Island star Harrison Solomon is heading to Flares York tonight (Thursday 17 October) for a special Sugar Rush event. The villa favourite will be making an appearance at the city centre venue. - YO1 Radio.

🏆 Second round voting closes next Wednesday (22 October) for the YorkMix Choice Awards, with winners to be announced at a live ceremony on Thursday 23 October at the Milner Hotel. The awards, sponsored by York St John University, are entirely decided by public vote. Early bird tickets (£12.50) are available until tomorrow, rising to £15 after that. - YorkMix.

🏠 York has secured £479,438 in government funding to help reduce and prevent rough sleeping across the city. The funding recognises ongoing needs of York residents at risk of or experiencing homelessness. - City of York Council press release.
🎨 A new community wellbeing and mental health hub based in Acomb Garth opened its doors to the public on 13 October, providing much-anticipated support for local residents. - City of York Council press release.
💼 A £7 million mayoral investment has been made to get York and North Yorkshire moving forward through David Skaith’s new ‘Moving Forward’ campaign, which addresses regional health challenges. The Movement, Activity and Sport Fund is now open for applications, offering grants from £3,000 to £49,999 for projects that promote physical activity. Applications close 7 December 2025. - York CVS.
