πŸ“° NEWS

πŸ‘‘ Sarah Ferguson Set to Be Stripped of the Freedom of York β€” City of York councillors will vote next Thursday 26 March on a motion to remove the Freedom of the City from Sarah Ferguson, ex-wife of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. The honour was bestowed on her when she visited York with her then-husband in 1987. Proposals to strip it were first raised in October, following the emergence of an email she sent to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in 2011 describing him in warmly complimentary terms. It surfaced in the Mail on Sunday. Her ex-husband β€” stripped of his royal titles, resigned from public roles β€” was himself arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office in February following publication of his own Epstein correspondence. Neither has been charged. Ferguson's representatives have said her email was sent in response to legal threats from Epstein. (Source: YorkMix)

πŸ” Claudia Lawrence: 17 Years On β€” Police Renew Appeal β€” Wednesday 18 March marked exactly 17 years since Claudia Lawrence was last seen and heard from, walking home through Heworth after her shift at the University of York's Goodricke College. She was 35, a chef, and she never arrived for work the following morning. Two days later β€” on 20 March 2009 β€” her father Peter reported her missing. Five weeks after that, North Yorkshire Police declared the case a suspected murder. No trace of Claudia has ever been found. Detective Superintendent Jon Sygrove said this week: "Despite the passage of time, we are still as determined as ever to achieve justice for Claudia. They have carried this knowledge for 17 years. Today I urge them: come forward and speak to us now." Anyone with information can report at northyorkshire.police.uk, call 101, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. 🏘️ 3,000-Home Village Between York and Harrogate Moves a Step Closer β€” North Yorkshire Council's executive voted on Tuesday to adopt the masterplan framework for Maltkiln β€” a proposed new community around Cattal railway station on the York–Harrogate line. The framework covers 3,000 homes alongside primary schools, health facilities, shops and sports provision, with direct rail links to York, Harrogate and Leeds. Cllr Mark Crane said he hoped to see "spades in the ground" within a year or two. Council leader Cllr Carl Les put the challenge bluntly β€” meeting North Yorkshire's housing targets would require building a new Maltkiln every year. Some local members called for more community consultation before proceeding. Developer Caddick is now consulting on an updated planning application. (Sources: YorkMix | Gazette & Herald)

πŸƒ SPORT

πŸ‰ So Close: Knights Come Within One Point of Toppling Unbeaten Wigan β€” York Knights came agonisingly close to one of the shocks of the Super League season last night, leading Wigan Warriors 14-0 before losing 23-22 in an extraordinary match at the Brick Community Stadium. David Nofoaluma and Paul Vaughan tries, plus six Danny Richardson points, had York firmly in command inside 25 minutes. A controversial yellow card for Ata Hingano flipped the game β€” Wigan scoring ten unanswered points to trail just 14-10 at the break. Noah Hodkinson (his first senior Super League try) and Adam Keighran put the Warriors ahead, and Harry Smith's drop goal looked to have settled it. But Hingano crashed over with four minutes left and Richardson converted to make it 23-22. York then carved out a chance for a levelling drop goal β€” Hingano's pass too casual, and Wigan held on. Paul McShane left with a suspected broken hand. Wigan boss Matt Peet praised York's quality afterwards, and rightly so. Next up for the Knights: home to Wakefield Trinity, Friday 27 March.
