THE YORK BRIEF β CULTURE BRIEF π Wednesday, March 25, 2026
π Exclusive to York Brief paid subscribers.
Spring is here, the evenings are lighter, and York's cultural calendar has absolutely no intention of letting you spend them on the sofa. Here's everything worth leaving the house for β starting tonight.
π₯ THIS WEEK'S PICK
The Secret Garden β The Musical | York Theatre Royal | Until Sat 4 April
If you see one thing this fortnight, make it this. The rarely staged but deeply loved musical is directed by Tony Award winner John Doyle β who ran York Theatre Royal from 1993 to 1997 before going on to win Tonys on Broadway for Sweeney Todd and Company. He's come home to direct it as an actor-musician production, York-made, with a cast who play their own instruments throughout. Lush, moving and the kind of show that sticks with you for days. Don't leave it until the last weekend.

π Tue 31 Mar β Thu 2 Apr | Meet Fred | York Theatre Royal Studio
Meet Fred opens in the YTR Studio on 31 March β a darkly funny satire on disability rights York Theatre Royal. The Studio shows are consistently where YTR takes its most interesting risks.
